Carpet cleaning methods

The main method is hot water extraction, which most people call steam cleaning. A pre-spray is worked into the pile to loosen the soil, the carpet is agitated so the solution reaches the base of the fibres, then hot water is injected under pressure and immediately extracted along with the dirt. It is the method carpet manufacturers tend to recommend for a periodic deep clean because it rinses rather than coats.

Where a carpet cannot take water, for instance a jute or sisal weave or a very old wool rug with unstable dyes, a low-moisture clean is used instead: an absorbent compound or encapsulation product is worked in, left to bond with the soil and vacuumed away. We test an inconspicuous corner first on anything delicate and tell you which method we are using and why.

Stain and odour removal

Stains are treated before the main clean. Tea, coffee, red wine, make-up, ink, candle wax, pet accidents and mystery marks each get a spotting agent matched to what caused them. Most come out. Bleach spots and dyes that have bonded to the fibre cannot be removed by any method, and you are told so on the day.

Odour is a separate job from the visible stain. A pet accident that has soaked through to the underlay will keep smelling after the surface looks clean, so the treatment goes down to the source and an odour neutraliser is applied rather than a perfume that masks it for a week. Smoke, damp and cooking smells are handled the same way.

Drying times and carpet protection

Our extraction machines pull the moisture back out on the same pass, so a typical room is dry to walk on within a few hours and fully dry the same day. Thick wool and heavily soiled carpets that need a second pass take longer; we will give you a realistic estimate for your rooms rather than a blanket figure.

A stain-guard protector can be applied after the clean if you want it. It puts a barrier on the fibre so the next spill sits on the surface long enough to be blotted up instead of soaking in, which is worth having on stairs, hallways and anywhere with children or pets.

Tell us that much on the phone or the form and you get a single figure for the whole job before anything is booked. Nothing is added on the day unless you ask for more to be done.

Upholstery and rug cleaning

The same hot water extraction, with smaller tools and gentler pressure, cleans sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, headboards and mattresses. Fabric is checked for colourfastness and fibre type first, because a viscose or a silk-mix cover behaves very differently to a cotton one. Loose rugs can be cleaned in place or, if they are delicate or badly soiled, taken away and returned.

Curtains and mattresses are part of the same trade for us. A mattress clean removes dust mite residue, sweat and marks from the sleeping surface and is dry by bedtime; curtains are cleaned hanging in place, which avoids the shrinkage risk of taking them down.

Domestic and commercial carpet cleaning

Most of the work is in homes: living rooms, stairs, bedrooms and hallways. The same machines also cover offices, shops, communal hallways in blocks of flats, waiting rooms and hospitality premises, where the work is booked outside opening hours so the floor is dry before the first person walks on it.
