The most common question before a carpet clean is how long until the room can be used again. Many people have had a carpet stay wet for two days after a rented machine. Four things decide the drying time, and they are set out below with realistic figures.
What drying time depends on
Four things set how quickly a carpet dries after hot water extraction:
- How much water goes in. A domestic or rented machine floods the carpet because its pump is strong and its suction is weak. An industrial machine injects a controlled amount at high temperature.
- How much water comes back out. This is the one that matters. Extraction power is what separates a carpet that is dry by teatime from one that is damp on Wednesday. Strong vacuum on the same pass pulls most of the moisture straight back into the tank.
- The carpet itself. A thick wool twist holds more water than a short synthetic pile. Heavy soiling that needs a second pass adds moisture too.
- The room. Airflow, temperature and humidity. A warm room with a window cracked open dries in a fraction of the time of a cold, closed one in January.
Realistic times
With an industrial extraction machine and a normal room, a carpet is dry to walk on in socks within two to four hours and fully dry within the day. Bedrooms with short synthetic pile are at the quick end. Thick wool in a living room, or a hallway that needed extra passes for traffic lanes, is at the slow end. Stairs are usually somewhere in between because they get plenty of air.
A quoted drying time of 24 to 48 hours describes a machine with weak extraction, not carpet cleaning in general.
What you can do to speed it up
- Leave the heating on at a normal level, or open a window a couple of inches if it is mild outside.
- Keep the door open so air moves through the room.
- Keep pets and children off it until it is dry to the touch, mainly so nothing gets ground into a damp pile.
- If furniture has been put back on protective pads or foil squares, leave them in place until the carpet is fully dry so no wood stain or rust transfers.
What you should not do
Do not put rugs back down on a damp carpet, and do not close the room up to “keep the warmth in”. Trapped moisture is what causes the musty smell some people associate with carpet cleaning. A carpet that has been extracted and left to air does not smell of anything.
